Responsible Gambling Week

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) is an annual event that encourages gamblers to stay within their limits and highlights the support available to people who feel gambling may have become a problem for them. Government provides British Columbians with free information and resources to support informed choices and healthy behaviours with respect to gambling participation through the British Columbia Responsible & Problem Gambling Program. “Responsible Gambling Awareness Week encourages gamblers to stay within their limits and highlights the support available to people who feel gambling may have become a problem,” Mrs D’Ath said. “As part of the week (July 24-30), gambling providers and Queensland Gambling Help have joined together to reduce the negative impact gambling. The Responsible Gambling Week starts on Monday, November 7. A similar initiative was held in the United States between September 15 and September 21. Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) is an annual event that encourages gamblers to stay within their limits and highlights the support available to people who feel gambling may have become a problem for them. What is Responsible Gambling Week?

Responsible Gambling Week runs this year from 1st – 7th November and is a campaign which aims to create a conversation with customers, staff and the wider public about gambling responsibly, driving awareness of:

  • how to gamble responsibly;
  • the tools that are available to help people gamble safely all year round;
  • sources of more advice and support.

The whole of the UK and Irish gambling industry – amusement arcades, bingo clubs, bookmakers and online – has come together to support Responsible Gambling Week. The Dunlewey Centre is also fully supportive of this week as an initiative to raise awareness around responsible gambling and the services available to anybody affected by it.

What is happening during Responsible Gambling Week?

Venues and websites provide information on responsible gambling throughout the year, with a range of different tools and options to help manage play. During RG Week, teams will be even more visible – using RG Week material and information about how to gamble responsibly and where to find further advice and support: all supporting venues and online sites have information.

A range of promotional material with key information has been made available to all supporting organisations: these materials cover some or all of the following:

  • ask questions about gambling behaviour
  • highlight five key behaviours of gambling responsibly
  • provide details of where and how to obtain further information and help if needed
  • promote the Responsible Gambling Week website and social media channels: Facebook and Twitter @RGWeek18

Gambling venues will be promoting Responsible Gambling Week, immediately prior to and during the Week. You’ll find posters, leaflets and banners in venues and online to encourage conversations about how to gamble responsibly.

Responsible Gambling Week 2020

Some venues are undertaking special events during the week. Online gambling websites will also be promoting the week with banner ads and pop-ups. Both land and online organisations will be promoting the week on social media: Facebook and Twitter Supporting organisations, such as Facebook, will also be supporting the week and promoting key messages and materials.
Key support organisations like the National Gambling Helpline, GamCare and GambleAware will also be promoting the week and preparing for increased numbers of enquiries due to the national campaign.

Staff working at gambling venues and online will continue to be points of contact for their customers who would like to know more about gambling responsibly or seek support if they are concerned about their gambling.

Leading charities providing help and support around gambling, Dunlewey Addiction Services, GamCare and YGAM, are also running workshops and training sessions throughout RG Week, with many focused on parents and those working with young people: teachers, youth workers and health professionals. These sessions will provide information which can help young people understand the risks associated with gambling, the choices they can make to gamble responsibly and what tools are available to help them manage their behaviour.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Training and Skills
The Honourable Yvette D'Ath

The Palaszczuk Government is encouraging people to think about their gambling habits as part of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, which starts today (Monday).

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the theme for this year was ‘Is your gambling getting out of hand? Think of your family’.

“Responsible Gambling Awareness Week encourages gamblers to stay within their limits and highlights the support available to people who feel gambling may have become a problem,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“As part of the week (July 24-30), gambling providers and Queensland Gambling Help have joined together to reduce the negative impact gambling may have on Queenslanders now and into the future.”

Mrs D’Ath said most people gamble at some point or another, but for some it can become a problem and have serious impacts.

Week

“This is why Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is so important and why the Government contributes more than $5.8 million each year to provide problem gambling treatment and support services.”

Today’s launch was organised by not-for-profit organisation Relationships Australia.

Relationships Australia CEO Dr Ian Law said it was great to see support from across industry, community and government for Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.

Responsible Gambling Week 2021

“It’s important to raise awareness of responsible gambling not only this week, but throughout the year. When family and friends are aware of issues that may arise related to problem gambling, they can play an important role in supporting their loved one to seek help,” Dr Law said.

“I encourage anyone concerned about their gambling to seek support by calling the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 for free and confidential 24-hour counselling and crisis support.”

Help can be also accessed through face-to-face counselling services, online services and counselling and a residential service.
